The New Wedding Hashtag: Custom Snapchat Filter

As a social media specialist, I live in a world of hashtags, and almost felt obligated to make one for my wedding, as silly as that might sound.

But I was having a hard time coming up with a play on words with our names. There were so many considerations for a wedding hashtag: it had to be easy to remember, short enough to type, not used by a million people already, and above all clever. That's a lot for a poor little hashtag to live up to!

Enter the idea of a custom wedding Snapchat filter. Allow me to explain...

Defining the Relationship: Snapchat & Me

Admittedly, I was a late adopter of Snapchat. I like things polished and planned, so Instagram and I were a match made in smartphone heaven. Snapchat by contrast seemed like the kind of quirky, passing phase I'd be better off skipping. I decided to give it a try though, if for no other reason than to keep up with the trends of my industry.

Now a frequent Snapchat user, I know this social media messaging platform to be much more than the occupational obligation that I once saw it as. Snapchat has helped me make instant "pen pals" out of the friends that were scattered across the country upon graduation.

I even found myself following a few brands and bloggers, whose Snapchat stories give me a glimpse of the everyday happenings normally hidden behind their public personas.

So it's not the disappearing act of silly selfies that appeals to me about Snapchat. It's the idea that you can tell the story of an event, a trip, or just a weekend of your life in a series of stills and videos, with an overlaid caption that's sure to make the snap recipient smile.

And what luck that one of the things I find most interesting about Snapchat - geofilters - recently became customizable for events like weddings.

What is a Snapchat Filter?

For those who don’t know, Snapchat geofilters can be found when a user scrolls right over the Snap she’s just taken. Basically, geofilters are graphics and sayings that overlay your photo or video and describe where you are or what special day it is.

My custom wedding Snapchat filter was only $18, and submitting it was actually easier than I thought. In fact, I did it in the half hour before I left for the rehearsal dinner! Here's how it works.

Snaps for T + Jeff

As you can see, the idea behind our wedding Snapchat filter was to have our little pup Tracy Rene photobomb the guests’ pictures!

The way I see it, many of my friends would have been sending Snaps at the wedding reception anyways, so why not make it a little more fun for them with a custom wedding Snapchat filter?

Unlike a wedding hashtag, a custom Snapchat filter wasn’t something extra they had to remember to do. They would already be scrolling through filters and voile, there’s Tracy!

So what do you think? Are custom wedding Snapchat filters the new wedding hashtag? I hope so!
